Title:
Update on the Improve the Image of Ramsey Along the Hwy 10 Corridor Initiative
Purpose/Background:
The first phase of the Highway 10 Corridor inspection program has been completed, with all businesses and property owners along the corridor receiving an initial visit, an informational letter, and a self-inspection checklist outlining applicable property maintenance and code compliance considerations.
The second phase of the program is well underway. This phase started at the west border along the south side of Highway 10 and moved eastward. To date, 36 business properties have been inspected, which is nearly all the business properties along the south side. A variety of code violations were identified, with the most common being outdoor junk accumulation, deteriorated structures, and missing ADA parking signage/striping.
The inspection process has also shown encouraging results, with multiple property owners already taking steps to clean up and improve their properties. Some property owners are reinvesting well beyond minimum standards due to the improved corridor. Approximately half of the properties inspected have had only minimal violations or few issues requiring attention.
As the Council may recall, starting this program on the south side was intentional as most of these properties have easier issues to correct. Once switching to the north side, it is anticipated that several properties will require more time to work through improvements to bring the sites up to minimum standards. Code Enforcement staff will try to visit the remaining properties this fall so that the property owners can plan and schedule the necessary improvements for summer 2027.
The program will continue to focus on communication, consistency, and cooperation with property owners to address identified deficiencies within reasonable timeframes. The overall goal is to improve the appearance, safety, and long-term maintenance of the Highway 10 Corridor while supporting local businesses and advancing the City Council's goal of strengthening Ramsey's image along this important commercial corridor.
