Title:

Traffic Concerns Near 146th Ave and Iodine St

Purpose/Background:

Recently staff and council members have received inquires  from residents  near the intersection of  146th Ave and Iodine St about the traffic in that area.  The concern  seems to be mainly  with speeding on 146th Ave.  The police have been notified and the residents have been happy with the response, but when the enforcement returns to normal the activity increases again.  The police records show no accidents, no tickets and no warnings for speed.  The residents want something done, but are unsure of what action they want taken.  Staff suggested that they get together at their "Night to Unite" block party and discuss the issue with their neighbors, and contact PW staff when they had a clearer idea of what their concerns are.  Staff has contact information for one of the residents and will  invite them to the meeting to share their findings.

Speeding, and the perception of speeding, in residential neighborhoods is a common problem throughout the City.  Our main response is increased police patrol, and deployment of the "speed sign" trailer to gather information and to remind people of the speed limit.  As discussed in the past, stop signs and speed bumps, are rarely effective in controlling a speeding problem, and sometimes cause additional issues.

Timeframe:

15 Minutes

Observations/Alternatives:

PW staff gathered some basic information on the intersection:
There is a STOP sign located on Iodine St., 146th Ave is a through street
There are T-intersection signs on both legs of 146th Ave
30 MPH posted at 146th Ave and County Road 5
Traffic counts were taken from 7/30 and 7/31
Iodine St -  283 average daily traffic (ADT)
146th Ave west of Iodine St - 423 ADT
146th Ave east of Iodine St - 535  ADT
