Adopt Resolution #16-12-249 to Promote a Patrol Officer to Sergeant
 

The purpose of this case is to request the City Council to promote a Patrol Officer to the position of Sergeant, filling a vacancy left by retiring Sergeant Tom Lueck.   
 
After 25 years of service, Sergeant Lueck retired from the City on December 7, 2016.  Staff  placed a high priority addressing the vacancy in order to best meet the City’s public service needs.   Sergeant Lueck's position was was advertised internally within the Police Department and three Patrol Officers were considered for the position.  

Staff is recommending Patrol Officer Chris Curtis as the Police Department's next Sergeant.  It may be of interest to the City Council that Officer Curtis started with the City as a Community Service Officer in May 2005.   He was was promoted to the position of Patrol Officer in May 2006.   Then, in June 2013  he began serving as one of the Department's Police Investigators.    Staff is pleased to recommend Officer Curtis as the City's newest Sergeant.  

A Patrol Officer recruitment to fill the vacancy created by promoting Officer Curtis is currently underway.

The funding required for this positions is well within the 2016 budget.  The estimated total cost in 2017 is $111,918 (wages and benefits) which is also accounted for in the budget.  
 

Staff recommends  moving ahead with promoting Patrol Officer Chris Curtis to the position of Sergeant, effective December 10, 2016, at $39.08 per hour based on step 3 of the 2016 wage scale.
