Title:

Declare the Results of the February 13, 2018 Special Primary Election

Purpose/Background:

Purpose:  The purpose of this case is to accept and declare the results of the February 13, 2018 Special Primary Election.

Background:  As per State Statutes, the City Council must serve as a Canvassing Board to accept and declare the results of a local election.   The Special Primary Election was held on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, and the City's eight polling places were open for voting from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The residents also had the opportunity to vote absentee if they chose, either at Ramsey City Hall, at Anoka County Elections Department, or by mail. 

The voter turnout for the special Primary Election, including absentee votes, was 1.37 percent.  Attached to this case is the Abstract of Votes Cast. 

The Special Primary Election was to fill a vacancy for an At-Large Council seat.  There were four candidates:  Skip Carlson, Chris Riley, Sue Suchy and Ida Theis.  The two candidates with the most votes will be on the ballot for the Special General Election scheduled for April 10, 2018.  The two candidates who received the most votes were Chris Riley and Ida Theis.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends accepting and declaring the results of the 2018 Special Primary Election.

Action:

Motion to accept and declare the results of the 2018 Special Primary Election.
