Title:

Declare the Results of the April 10, 2018 Special General Election

Purpose/Background:

Purpose:  The purpose of this case is to accept and declare the results of the April 10, 2018 Special General Election.

Background:  As per State Statutes, the City Council must serve as a Canvassing Board to accept and declare the results of a local election.   The Special General Election was held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, and the City's eight polling places were open for voting from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The residents also had the opportunity to vote absentee if they chose, either at Ramsey City Hall, at Anoka County Elections Department, or by mail. 

The voter turnout for the Special General Election, including absentee votes, was 1.48 percent.  Attached to this case is the Abstract of Votes Cast. 

The Special General Election was to fill a vacancy for an At-Large Council seat.  There were two candidates on the ballot:  Chris Riley and Ida Theis. Chris Riley won the seat with a total of  167 votes.  Ida Theis received 63 votes.  This election is to fill the partial term ending January 7, 2019. 

Recommendation:

Staff recommends accepting and declaring the results of the 2018 Special General Election.

Action:

Motion to accept and declare the results of the 2018 Special General Election.
