ACTION REQUESTED:

Approval to proceed with South Sunset Road Diet design and construction. (Corn/MacCornack)

BACKGROUND:

Initiated by: James MacCornack

Councilor Johnson requested that this item be brought to the Infrastructure Committee as an action item. A road diet implementation on S. Sunset Ave. between McGaffey and Brasher is a proposed treatment to address existing traffic safety issues, including speeding and crash history. Based on FHWA research as well as traffic studies that were completed on this roadway segment, this is an appropriate treatment for this roadway segment. This project is proposed to be completed in Spring 2026.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION

The estimated cost of obliterating and replacing existing striping on this roadway segment is approximately $58,000.00. The Street Department has $150,000 identified for pavement markings and striping in the current budget.

BOARD AND COMMITTEE ACTION:

The Infrastructure Committee recommended approval 3-2 at its meeting on October 20, 2025. The Finance Committee recommended approval 4-0 at its meeting on December 4, 2025.
