Discussion and possible action to approve the installation of Naloxone (Narcan) vending machines at select Webb County facilities to increase access to life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication for the community at NO COST, and authorizing the Webb County Judge to execute all relevant documents, and any matters incident thereto.

Issue: Opioid overdoses continue to be a growing public health concern across Texas and the United States. Naloxone (Narcan) is a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and prevent death when administered in a timely manner. Currently, access to naloxone is limited to certain healthcare settings or emergency responders. Increasing public access to this medication through strategically placed vending machines can help ensure that life-saving treatment is readily available during critical situations.

Solution: Approve the installation of Naloxone vending machines at selected Webb County facilities as part of a pilot initiative to improve public access to overdose reversal medication.
Proposed locations may include:

• Webb County Public Health Department
• Webb County Jail public access area
• Community Action Agency facility

These machines would provide free naloxone kits and informational materials to the public. Coordination with public health partners may assist with procurement and stocking of the machines.
 
Result: Approval of this initiative will increase access to life-saving medication and strengthen Webb County’s ability to respond to opioid-related emergencies.

Naloxone vending machines have been implemented in numerous communities nationwide as a public health strategy to reduce overdose deaths. These machines allow individuals to obtain naloxone kits anonymously and free of charge.
