Discuss, consider and take appropriate action on recognizing Williamson County EMS as the recipient of the 2017 Texas EMS Public Information / Injury Prevention Award.

Background

Williamson County EMS was awarded the 2017 Texas EMS Public Information / Injury Prevention Award at the Texas EMS Conference on November 21, 2017.  The award honors an EMS agency for their outstanding achievement in public education and injury prevention.

Over this past year Williamson County EMS has participated in numerous classes and events to educate the public.
  • The department is committed to teaching CPR.  Over 1,100 people completed Take-10 CPR in 2017.
  • Over 1,500 people completed an AHA CPR course, 900 of which were non-medically trained citizens.
  • The department implemented the PulsePoint App.  This free application can be downloaded on a person’s phone.  It alerts them of a publicly located cardiac arrest if they are within 750 feet of the event.  This allows lifesaving CPR to be started quickly.  This app also allows crowd-sourced entries of publicly available automated external defibrillators (AED) so they can be quickly located in a cardiac arrest situation.
  • Stop the Bleed is a national initiative to reduce deaths from uncontrolled bleeding.  This past year the class was presented to more than 200 people and is continuing to expand.
  • Child Car Seat Check Program – In 2017, the department checked almost 200 car seats and discovered that 75% were installed incorrectly.  The department also implemented the use of a “roll-over convincer”.  The tool demonstrated the importance of properly restraining children in roll-over type accidents.
  • The department collaborates with local hospitals to offer Safe Baby Academy.  This is a free three-hour program for expectant parents and caregivers covering safe sleep, home safety, water safety, child seat safety, hands on infant CPR and car seat installation.  More than 200 people attended the classes in 2017.
  • The department partners with local hospitals to offer Stepping On, a class on fall prevention for the elderly.
  • The department educated many local high school students on the dangers of driving under the influence with a DWI Awareness Program.
