Agenda Item
Discuss, consider, and take appropriate action on Williamson County's participation in the U.S. Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Area Program (PSAP) as part of the 2020 Census.
Background
Williamson County is participating, through the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG), in the US Census Bureau’s Participant Statistical Area Program (PSAP). As part of this program, the County has 120 days to update Census tracts, block groups, and Census Designated Places. These updates will be the basis for demographics for the next 10 years.
Because of the importance of, and many uses for, demographic information, including the distribution of ever-tight Federal dollars (grants, etc), County staff did not want to undertake the re-drawing of tracts and block groups without consulting City and other County stakeholders.
This is a process open to all interested government entities, but the County must be the submitting agency to CAPCOG and make the final determination on all edits. The County will invite representatives from all of the incorporated cities to an informational meeting in early February. Following this meeting, Cities that are interested in updating the data will work with the County GIS staff.
Due to the 120-day timeline from the Census Bureau, there will only be a few weeks for edits to be made to the data before the County will compile the changes and submit the final set to CAPCOG and on to the Census Bureau.
