Discuss, consider, and take appropriate action on the approval of the Trauma Focused Equine-Assisted Therapy for Justice System Involved Youth Resolution for Juvenile Services.

Background

Juvenile Services is applying for grants funds through the Office of the Governor-Criminal Justice Division. Williamson County Juvenile Services will contract with Pecan Creek Ranch to provide Trauma-Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to youth and families involved in the Juvenile Justice System to promote healing from trauma, build resilience, and encourage successful community re-integration. Services will occur at WCJS for youth in the C.O.R.E. Residential Treatment Program, and also at Pecan Creek Ranch for youth in the community, and youth transitioning from placement back home. Eligibility will be determined through a set of criteria developed by WCJS and Pecan Creek Ranch, and will focus on youth with trauma who may not be responding to the traditional talk therapy. We know that when the families are involved in the treatment process, successful outcomes for youth are greatly increased. TF-EAP will be offered to families who are preparing for their child to transition back into the home, as well as those that have continued to struggle in the community.  The department is requesting $65,400 in grants funds and there is no match requirement.
