Discuss, consider and take appropriate action on request to apply for grant funding through the Office of Governor for a Felony Mental Health Court.

Background

Many individuals are suffering from mental illness can become involved in the criminal justice system, often with non-violent felony charges. If they receive the proven effective services of a specialty court program, the cycle of recidivism can be broken. Mental Health Courts increase public safety, facilitate participation in effective mental health and substance abuse treatment, and improve the quality of life for people suffering with mental illness who have been charged with crimes. Mental Health Courts increases collaboration between the criminal justice system and mental health providers, thereby improving mental health stability for participants and reducing their involvement in the criminal justice system.
