During the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals have struggled with isolation, anxiety and other mental health related issues.  A Feb. 10, 2021 study from Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reported the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting econimic hardships have negatively affected many people's mental health and created new barriers for people suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders. The study reports that during the pandemic, about 4 out of every 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder.  From January to June, 2019, according to the National Health Institute (NHIS) 11% of adults reported symptoms of Anxiety Disorder and/or Depressive Disorder.  In January 2021, a survey showed that 41.1% of adults were experiencing these symptoms. 
Many essential workers face a number of challenges, including a greater risk of contracting the coronavirus than other workers. Compared to nonessential workers, essential workers are more likely to report symptoms of anxiety or depression (42% vs. 30%), starting or increasing substance use (25% vs. 11%) and suicidal thoughts (22% vs. 8%) during the pandemic. 
There is hope though and resources available to those in need.  In addition to Bluebonnet Trails 24/7 Crisis Hotline, the State of Texas HHS has launched a statewide COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line to help connect Texans feeling overwhelmed and stressed with mental health professionals.  The Commissioners Court has allocated CARES and ARPA funds, which will provide vital mental health services, fill identified gaps in services and provide jail diversion for non-violent individuals who are in crisis.
