Discuss, consider and take appropriate action on proclaiming December 8th, 2016 as Tree of Angels Day in Williamson County.
Background
The Williamson County District Attorney’s Office respectfully request your consideration and support with an official Proclamation designating December 8, 2016, as Tree of Angels® Day in Williamson County. In December 1991, a memorable tradition was initiated by Verna Lee Carr with People Against Violent Crime to recognize that the holiday season is a particularly difficult time for crime victims and their families. This special event is a reverent forum for communities to honor victims of crime and their families by making it possible to bring an angel to place on a tree, known as a Christmas tree. The trauma, pain and sorrow that so many crime victims endure can be alleviated by acts of compassion from within their own community. The District Attorney’s Office can think of no better time than during the holiday season for the community to acknowledge with a Proclamation those who are walking life’s highway due to a violent crime. On March 21, 2000, the Tree of Angels® was registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to provide victims ownership of a special ceremony in December. Since its inception, the Tree of Angels® has grown and now embraces victims and victims’ families throughout Texas communities. The impact of the Tree of Angels® has crossed the ocean and was established in New Wales, Australia in 2004. Above all, the Tree of Angels® has become an expression of genuine love and support. In December of 2000, former President George W. Bush as Governor of Texas, recognized with the first Proclamation for the “Tree of Angels® Week” in Texas. Throughout Texas the “Tree of Angels®” since has been recognized by the Texas Governor each December. In recognition of this years Tree of Angels, an unadorned tree will be set up in District Attorneys Office, Ste 265, at the Williamson County Justice Center, 405 MLK Blvd. in Georgetown where families may place their Angels and cookies and punch will be set out for visitors to enjoy.
