Agenda Item
Discuss, consider and take appropriate action approving the retirement of K-9 Rody and selling him to handler, Deputy Josiah Bennett, for the sum of $1.00.
Background
Dr. Shane Daigle, DVM has confirmed that 8 year old, K-9 Rody's chronic health issues of the past have continued to progress. Rody has dental issues which affect his ability to perform bite work effectively. He was also diagnosed with Lenticular/Nuclear Sclerosis a couple of years ago, which is a condition associated with opacification of the lens in both eyes. This condition can lead to vision impairment including depth perception loss, peripheral vision loss, and the inability to "track" objects outside of the direct line of vision. Rody also presented several weeks ago for an episode of heat intolerance in the field while on a 5 mile track. Had it not been for the great training and astute knowledge possessed by Deputy Bennett, Rody may have progressed to a heat stroke or even worse, death. Dr. Daigle has stated that retirement would be best for Rody due to his dental, eyes, thermoregulatory and early degenerative joint issues in his hips. Dr. Daigle feels that Rody's health concerns are and will continue to hamper/inhibit his ability to be an effective member of the WCSO K9 unit.
It is requested that the Commissioners Court consider selling K-9 Rody to his handler, Deputy Josiah Bennett for the sum of $1.00. Dr. Daigle has expressed that Deputy Bennett has been exemplary in his care, compassion, respect and admiration for partner, Rody. It has shown through each and every time they have visited the Vet hospitals, the mutual respect and devotion that each have displayed towards and for one another. Deputy Bennett will be responsible for Rody's medical and food expenses. Deputy Bennett will also assume personal ownership and liabilities. K-9 Rody was an asset forfeiture fund purchase.
