Discuss, consider and take appropriate action to approve the Sheriff's Office applying for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, FY 2018 Local Solicitation.

Background

The Sheriff's Office is seeking to apply for approximately $3,600.00 through the Edward Byrne Memorial JAG Program for the Junior Deputy Academy program. This program offers children ages 9-14 with an interest in law enforcement the opportunity to have hands-on experience within the Sheriff's Office. The junior cadets will have four days to investigate mock crime scenes, collect evidence, tour the Sheriff's Office and County jail, and receive first aid training. These funds will provide needed supplies for 130 students attending during the summer of 2019.

The FBI is implementing the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and all agencies must meet their 2021 compliance deadline. Because of this deadline, all JAG applicants not currently certified as NIBRS compliant by their state or the FBI must dedicate three percent of their JAG award towards this certification. We will not be certified as NIBRS compliant by the application due date, so approximately $110.00 of the total amount requested will be used specifically towards certification expenses.

This grant requires no resolution or match. If we are awarded the grant, three certifications will be required prior to receiving funds and will be presented to the court at that time.

Staff recommends the following action:  Approve to apply for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, FY 2018 Local Solicitation and authorize appropriate county department personnel to complete documentation relevant to the implementation of the grant.
