Reason for Recommended Action/Background

Heather Nichols, Executive Director of the Yolo County Resource Conservation District (RCD) will provide the Board of Supervisors a brief update on the Yolo County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). In 2021, the Board of Supervisors designated the RCD as the Coordinator of the Yolo County Fire Safe Council via an update to their MOU. The RCD, in partnership with the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services with grant funds from Cal Fire, have been working to develop a CWPP for the County. This CWPP is essentially the strategic plan for the Yolo Co. Fire Safe Council and will consist of a list of wildfire protection projects addressing community outreach and education, defensible space and home hardening, evacuation and access planning, and fuels management. The RCD has been working with the CWPP Steering Committee (see members below), the countywide Fire Safe Council (see members below), West Winters and Capay Valley Fire District Fire Safe Councils, and community members to develop a comprehensive list of projects to include in the final draft of the CWPP that will be submitted to Cal Fire for review. Once the CWPP has been approved by Cal Fire, the Board of Supervisors will be asked to adopt the CWPP. The Fire Safe Council will use the adopted CWPP to seek funding to implement the projects in the plan. Updates to CWPPs happen approximately every five years as project get completed and new community priorities are identified. This presentation is to inform the County Board of Supervisors that the final draft is currently being developed and that public input will be accepted through the end of December.
