Reason for Recommended Action/Background
The TruNarc device, made by Thermo Fisher Scientific, is a handheld narcotics analyzer that uses Raman spectroscopy to identify drugs and other controlled substances in the field. It allows law enforcement officers and forensic teams to quickly analyze substances without opening packaging or handling unknown materials, reducing the risk of exposure.

- Non-Destructive Testing – In many instances, can scan through plastic bags, glass vials, and other containers without needing direct contact.
- User-Friendly Interface – Simple point-and-shoot operation for quick field use.
- Comprehensive Drug Library – Includes fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and synthetic opioids.
- Safe for Officers – Minimizes the risk of accidental exposure to fentanyl or other hazardous substances.
It’s widely used by law enforcement and forensic labs to streamline drug enforcement operations and improve officer safety.
The TrueNarc device is intended to be kept at the Yolo County Jail and will be accessible to all Yolo County law enforcement agencies.
