Reason for Recommended Action/Background

Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency’s (HHSA) Public Health Branch operates a Car Seat Safety Program (CSSP) offering car seat safety check events and one-on-one appointments intended to support the local population in correct use of car seats and seatbelts.

Under this Agreement, the CSSP will continue its efforts to educate the community regarding proper use of car seats and seatbelts.  These efforts will include collaboration with other County departments, as well as local organizations such as law enforcement, schools, and day care centers.  These efforts will be focused on:
  1. Reducing inappropriate and incorrect use of child passenger car seats and seatbelts through various community outreach and educational efforts;
  2. Providing no-cost car seats to income-eligible families in the community; and
  3. Delivering linguistically relevant and culturally appropriate educational resources to County residents.
Staff hereby recommends approval of the Agreement with Office of Traffic Safety to allow HHSA to receive $250,000 in funding for the CSSP to continue its strategic efforts of outreach and educational events aimed at reducing the risk of injury or death of County children under the age of eight as a result of a vehicle collision.
