Reason for Recommended Action/Background

In January 2014, the Board of Supervisors approved the vision of an integrated Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) in Yolo County to include the Department of Employment and Social Services and the newly combined Department of Health Services (made up of the former Department of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health and Department of Health). This integration was completed over three phases, the last of which implemented a new structure at HHSA consisting of five branches. One of these was the Community Health Branch, which was the branch focused on efforts to improve public health while incorporating elements of alcohol, drug, and mental illness prevention.

The HHSA Community Health Branch is requesting to be renamed to the Public Health Branch to better assist Yolo County residents in accessing public health services and information. The name change request comes after years of heightened attention to public health due to the COVID-19 pandemic and feedback from Yolo County staff and community members. T
he name change will allow Yolo County residents to more easily locate Public Health information and services in the county and will allow staff opportunities to more clearly communicate to the public on issues of concern related to the public’s health. Services, programs, and responsibilities remain unchanged, and the updated name will allow staff opportunities to communicate to the public more clearly on issues of concern related to the public health.
