Ordinance 2nd Reading - Building Safety:
Consider Ordinance No. 2024-O0032, adding Article 28.17 to the City of Lubbock Code of Ordinances with adoption of the 2021 International Existing Building Code.
Item Summary
On March 5, 2024, the City Council approved the first reading of the ordinance.
The International Existing Building Code is a model building code that covers repair, alteration, addition and change of occupancy for existing buildings while achieving appropriate levels of safety without requiring full compliance with the new construction requirements contained in the other International Codes. The intent of this code is to provide flexibility to permit the use of alternative approaches to achieve compliance with minimum requirements that provide a reasonable level of safety, health, property protection and general welfare insofar as they are affected by the repair, alteration, change of occupancy, addition and relocation of existing buildings. The Code is promulgated by the International Code Council, updated triennially through a legislative process involving input and voting by member jurisdictions nationwide, and further amended by the City of Lubbock to suit unique local conditions. The proposed ordinance will be newly adopted with the 2021 edition being the initial code reference.
