Resolution - Parks and Recreation:
Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to accept a donation in the amount of $47,398.72 from Lubbock Experience, Inc., for the maintenance and repairs of the Tornado Memorial located at the corner of Avenue Q and Glenna Goodacre Boulevard.
Item Summary
As part of the Downtown Revitalization Action Plan, the City Council approved a capital project in February 2016, to construct a Downtown Gateway Tornado Memorial, and they appropriated funding for the construction of the project. In June 2019, the City Council authorized the Mayor to execute a License Agreement with Lubbock Experience, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, for the construction of the Tornado Memorial.
Lubbock Experience, Inc., assumed responsibility for the construction of the Memorial, with the opening date occurring on May 11, 2021. Significant private funds were raised for the project as well as a prior approval of funds from the Central Business District Tax Increment Financing zone. Upon completion of the Memorial, the license agreement expired and future maintenance of the site reverted to the City for long-term care and operation.
This resolution authorizes the remaining funds held by Lubbock Experience, Inc., to be transferred to the Parks Department for needed maintenance and repairs to the Tornado Memorial.
Fiscal Impact
The donation of $47,398.72 to the Parks and Recreation Donation Account is to assist with costs associated with the maintenance of the Tornado Memorial.
