Special Call Historic Preservation Commission
Meeting Date:
03/06/2024
Initiator:
Cathy Sanders, Planning and Community Development Admin I
AGENDA ITEM TITLE:
Consider approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness for the property located at 443 North 16
th
for demolition and rehabilitation, or take other necessary action. (Jody King)
BACKGROUND:
The application was submitted by the property owner requesting the approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness to restore and renovate three (3) modified structures to their original 1906 condition, look, purpose, and style. The modified structures are the garage on the E side of the property, the two-room exam room on the NW side of the property, and the added clinic (rectangular portion) connecting the mansion at its rear to the N side of the originally separate stables. The garage was originally a partially enclosed sun porch. The two-room exam room was originally the “porte cochere” that had an open design with ornate columns and roof railings. The added clinic (rectangular portion) was originally a breezeway between the house and the stables with plants and gardens entwined. The original style of architecture was Georgian Revival with a uniform limestone rock-faced exterior. The add-ons listed above were not in keeping with this architectural style and are not included in the National Register of the Fite Estate. Given that these structures are non-contributing to the historic status of the Fite Estate, their demolition and rehabilitation would not affect the structure’s national register status.
RECOMMENDED STAFF ACTION:
