CS22-012
Date:
November 4, 2021
To:
Mayor and Council
Thru
:
Joshua A. Wright, City Manager
Debra Stapleton, Assistant City Manager
From:
Andy Bass, Deputy City Manager
Subject:
Renaming of Environmental Educational Center
Proposed Motion:
Move City Council approve the renaming of the Chandler Environmental Education Center to the Chandler Nature Center.
Background/Discussion
The Environmental Education Center (EEC) is the gateway to Veterans Oasis Park, located at 4050 East Chandler Heights Road (Attachment A). More than a decade old, the EEC provides quality, nature-focused programming for the public, including outdoor experiences, trained staff, exhibits and recreational programs. It also serves as a vital partner in community collaborations with state and local agencies and is a valuable resource for classroom teachers, parents, and non-formal educators. Continuing in the EEC’s commitment to connecting visitors to the natural world around them, the Community Services Department is recommending a facility rebranding and name change.
The re-branding and re-naming of the EEC to the Chandler Nature Center will promote partnerships, enhance programming and improve engagement with visitors all of which are critical to achieve continued success. Chandler Nature Center was selected to clearly identify the facility as a unique, regional entity designed to educate patrons about nature as well as the environment, and is more representative of the programs and services offered at the facility.
The Parks and Recreation Board unanimously recommended that Council approve the re-naming of the Environmental Education Center to Chandler Nature Center at its November 4, 2021, meeting.
