Subject:

Resolution No. 5987, Supporting the Naming of a United States Naval Vessel the USS Chandler

Proposed Motion:

Move City Council pass and adopt Resolution No. 5987, supporting the naming of a United States Naval vessel the USS Chandler; and authorizing the Mayor and/or the City Manager to take all action necessary or appropriate to carry out the purposes of this resolution.

Background:

The United States Navy has a long-standing tradition of naming ships after American cities to honor the history, people, and contributions of those communities to the nation. The City of Chandler has a proud history of supporting the United States Armed Forces, with residents having served with distinction in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and other branches, and Chandler is home to a strong and active veteran community.

The Secretary of the Navy is responsible for selecting names for U.S. Navy battle force ships that reflect the nation’s heritage. Naming a future naval vessel, such as an Amphibious Ship, Expeditionary Fast Transport, or Submarine, the USS Chandler would recognize the service and sacrifice of Chandler residents, including those who have given their lives in defense of the United States.

The City of Chandler’s Military and Veterans Affairs Commission (MVAC) has voted in favor of petitioning the Secretary of the Navy to name a future U.S. Navy vessel the USS Chandler.
