City Council Memorandum Fire Memo No.
Date:
June 20, 2022
To:
Mayor and Council
Thru:
Joshua H. Wright, City Manager
Thomas Dwiggins, Fire Chief
From:
Subject:
Resolution No. 5582 authorizing the submittal of an application for an Indian Gaming Revenue Sharing Grant to the Ak-Chin Indian Community for the Chandler Fire Department in the amount of $204,459.95
Proposed Motion:
Move City Council pass and adopt Resolution No. 5582, authorizing the submittal of an application for an Indian Gaming Revenue Sharing Grant to the Ak-Chin Indian Community for the Chandler Fire Department in the amount of $204,459.95, and authorizing the Mayor, or his designee, to execute the application in conjunction with the grant application to be submitted to the Ak-Chin Indian Community on behalf of the City.
Background:
The Chandler Fire Department (CFD) will submit an application for an Indian Gaming Revenue Sharing Grant to the Ak-Chin Indian Community in the amount of $204,459.95 for the purchase of advanced, battery-powered, vehicle extrication equipment.
Extrication tools purchased with grant funds awarded by the Ak-Chin Indian Community will replace existing equipment that has reached the end of its functional lifespan and is experiencing a decrease in effectiveness and safety during its operation. Vehicles equipped with extrication tools respond to a unique set of emergency incidents, and the firefighters assigned to these units receive specialized training. Vehicle collisions are one type of emergency response that require the utilization of specialized extrication tools to spread, lift, and secure the involved vehicles in order to provide the necessary medical care and removal of injured persons.
Grant funding from the Ak-Chin Indian Community will be used to purchase the latest, battery-powered tools to accomplish these life-saving actions, replacing current tools. Battery-powered extrication tools are easier to deploy, lighter weight, more robust, and represent the most technologically advanced option available to firefighters. As a part of the regional automatic and mutual aid response system, these new tools will improve the mechanical extrication of incidents in Chandler and surrounding communities. Implementation will happen immediately upon delivery. The Chandler fire training staff will facilitate this process.
Discussion:
Move that City Council pass and adopt Resolution No.
Financial Implications:
This reimbursable grant does not require matching funds.
