Resolution No. 5904, Authorizing a Grant Application for, and Acceptance of Grant Funds from, the Arterial Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program for Improvements to Chandler Boulevard from Dobson Road to Price Road

Proposed Motion:

Move City Council pass and adopt Resolution No. 5904, authorizing a grant application for, and acceptance of grant funds from, the Arterial Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program to fund the repaving of and other improvements to Chandler Boulevard from Dobson Road to Price Road.

Background:

In preparation for new funding programs associated with Proposition 479, the Maricopa Association of Governments has issued a federally-funded call for projects for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of arterial roadways in fiscal years 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28. The program funds repaving and other improvements made on arterial streets.

Chandler Boulevard from Dobson Road to Price Road is in need of repaving. Additionally, a safety assessment will be performed on this road segment to determine if any other improvements would be feasible to enhance safety.

Resolution No. 5904 will authorize the city to apply for and accept a $4.42 million federal grant, which would pay for up to 70% of design and construction costs to repave the roadway and make other improvements, such as Americans with Disabilities Act enhancements.

Financial Implications:

If awarded, up to $4.42 million in federal grant funds would supplant local street maintenance funding that would otherwise need to be spent on this road segment, allowing local street maintenance funding to be allocated to repaving other roadways in need of maintenance. This grant requires a 30% local match ($1.9 million).
