League of Arizona Cities and Towns Annual Dues
Proposed Motion:
Move City Council authorize the payment of FY 2021-2022 membership dues to the League of Arizona Cities and Towns in the amount of $100,800.
Background/Discussion
The City of Chandler is an active member of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns (League). Each year the City is assessed annual dues based on a per capita formula and minimum base fee. At the recommendation of the League Budget Subcommittee, the League Executive Committee (of which the Mayor is a member) voted to forgo any changes to the League membership dues formula for FY 2021-2022.
The League works closely with the City in providing a variety of services including legislative and lobbying assistance. The League’s legislative areas of focus are outlined in the Municipal Policy Statement, which is crafted utilizing their policy committee process and allows issues to be vetted by elected officials throughout the State. The League takes additional policy guidance from the Executive Committee, on which Chandler is represented by Mayor Hartke. When an issue is of statewide concern, the League will take a lead position, providing responsive legislative advocacy and quantitative analysis utilizing context provided by Chandler’s policymakers and technical experts. As has been evidenced, this support is critical during the legislative session and allows cities to work together on issues of regional and municipal interest.
COVID-19 reinforced the beneficial services of the League, as they have provided additional support in conversations with State and Federal officials and national advocacy organizations. The League also provides relevant trainings for elected officials and municipal staff, coordinates professional associations, organizes an annual conference, and produces many useful resources, reports and publications.
