MINUTES
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Garland convened in regular session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at City Hall, 200 North Fifth Street, Garland, Texas, with the following members:

ITEMS FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSIDERATION

THE COMMISSION VOTED ON A CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR.
Shirley Robnett Chair and Gail Belton Vice-Chair were elected to serve another year in their respective roles.
b.
RAY LESZCYNSKI -PUBLIC & MEDIA RELATIONS FOR THE CITY OF GARLAND WILL SPEAK ON THE CITY PRESS
Spoke to the commission on the City of Garlands Communications Outreach Survey. Ray explained where the survey would be allowed and where it can be dropped off at. Commissioners also suggested various locations that the survey should be provided.

JERRY CLICK , GARLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT DEMONSTRATED CHEST COMPRESSION CPR
Research has shown that doing chest compressions, without rescue breaths, can circulate that oxygen and be as effective in doing it as traditional compression/rescue breath CPR for the first few minutes. Over 356,000 deaths a year occur do to cardiac arrest. The first few minutes are crucial to survivability.
Commissioners practiced chest compression CPR while listening to instructions from Jerry.

POLICE OFFICER REPORT -
Lt. St. Claire updated the commission on the different scams that are now happening. And to beware of counterfeit merchandise. And with the holiday season approaching porch pirates will be more active. It was also suggested that some tips to stay safe should be published in the City Press.

Unfunded Trips
Murder Mystery Dinner Theater in Grapevine on September 9 for 20 people – was a success. Group had a wonderful time and were happy to be able to go
Munster Museum in Waxahachie on September 27 for 25 people. Our group toured a replica of the Munster Mansion (from the popular TV show) and posed for pictures. They also had lunch and stopped at the Waxahachie HEB.
Plano Escape Room on October 5 for 25 people. Our group was divided in to 2 groups. Each group was locked in a separate room and followed clues in order to “escape” from the room within the 60 minute time limit. The group also enjoyed lunch before heading home.
Congregate Meal Program
Home Deliveries will end as of October 31
All participants receiving home delivered meals who might need Meals on Wheels have been referred to Dallas County in an effort to continue this service
Efforts to “spread the news” about our senior center and our lunch program are in progress. One method of getting the word out is to pass out flyers about our center and programs in our neighborhoods and chatting with our residents. It is important that our communities know we are here for them and ready to help them.
Active Aging Week October 3 – October 6
Staff created 8 separate activities for participants. Those participants who complete each activity will receive a prize bag which includes items such as a water bottle, a keto bar, bag clips, and a stress ball.

Fall Festival October 26 – featuring fun games and fair food
Friendsgiving Pot Luck November 10 with musical entertainment
Veterans Breakfast November 11
Christmas Lunch December 16 with musical entertainment

COMMISSION CHAIR UPDATE
Shirley reminded commissioners about Flu shots and that if you fill out a form the Sanitation department would carry out your trash bins for those that needed assistance.
