MINUTES
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of the City of Garland convened in regular session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2024, in the Work Session Room, 200 North Fifth Street, Garland, Texas, with the following members:

Consider approval of Senior Advisory Commission minutes for the February 1, 2024, meeting.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Persons who desire to address the Committee on any item on the agenda are allowed three minutes to speak. Testimony may be held until the item is considered or given at the beginning of any committee meeting. Invited testimony may also occur at any time, subject to a request of the Member of the Committee and with the approval of the Committee Chairperson.

ITEMS FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSIDERATION
a.
Mariah Phipps-Jack of the Office of Emergency Management of the City of Garland presented on the Caregiver Planning Symposium.
Caregiver event, event will be biannual. This is something new they are bringing to the city.
28 individuals participated for the event.
OEM is working on an emergency preparation plan for the city.
Topic one - is emergency planning and what should be in a plan and what others will be doing in this plan.
Topic 2 - Exercises and training on how you conduct the EM Plan
Topic 3 - How to restart the plan and when affected by a disaster
They will be sending out email and calls to get more people involved.
Event will be June 12 9am – noon at Fire admin
Resources will are daycare, home healthcare, care organization, hazard mitigation action plans.
They already had public meetings for the inputs 2/17/2022 and 2/26/2022
15 questions on how the community can help with the EM plans
Survey: we got 139 responses
78% of garland uses the garland alert system.
Out of those surveyed, the top three concerns are
Tornado
Fire
Cyber attack
Other questions are asked Do you live in flood insurance?
76% do not have flood insurance in Garland.
The survey helped create our current EM plan.
The next survey will go out 2027.
The next thing they are working on is an Emergency plan for the departments in case of emergencies.
