MINUTES
The Library Board of the City of Garland convened in regular session at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, in the Work Session Room, 200 North Fifth Street, Garland, Texas, with the following members:

CITIZEN COMMENTS
Persons wishing to address issues not on the agenda may have three minutes to address the Library Board at this time. The Library Board is prohibited from discussing any item not posted according to the Texas Open Meetings Act.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF APRIL 10, 2023, REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Motion was made that the Minutes of the April 10, 2023, regular meeting be approved with recommended correction.
Motion made by Board Member Gwendolyn Daniels and seconded by Board Member Adam Greenup.

ITEMS FOR INDIVIDUAL CONSIDERATION
a.
LIBRARY SERVICE PRESENTATION
Librarian Swinehart provided an overview of HelpNow, the Library's online tutoring resource. HelpNow provides patrons access to SkillSurfer, Language Lab, MEET, Brainwave, FlashBulb, and eParachute.
b.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN/BOND PROGRAM UPDATES
Director Archibald reported the North Garland Library exterior facade enhancements and signage project is out for bid requests. The first Library Material Kiosk has been installed next to City Hall and the second is scheduled to be installed at Lon Wynne Park in July or August. The Central Library has closed to the public and the Central Library Express opened to the public on May 1. The bid requests for the new Walnut Creek Library closed; bids are in the review process.
c.
LIBRARY BRANCH NAME
Director Archibald requested the Board to consider adding "community" or "cultural center" to the name for the new Walnut Creek Library. The Library Board decided to keep the original suggestion of West Garland Library.

SUMMER READING ADVENTURE
Director Archibald presented the Board with the summer edition of
Off the Shelf
.
Public Services Administrator Cizek provided an overview of the Library's new Summer Reading Adventure. The Library transitioned from passive performances to hands-on activities called Interactive Labs. This will include a Spanish language only session provided by Cara Mia. Interactive Labs will be held in two sessions on specified dates at each location allowing more participation opportunities for patrons. Summer Reading Adventure Kickoff events will be held June 2 through June 4. Patrons of all ages are able to participate in the Summer Reading Adventure by setting their own goals and turning in completed goal sheets for a chance to win a grand prize.
