SUMMER PREVIEW PRESENTATION (Recreation Coordinator Richard Ortiz & Aquatics Staff) -Recreation Coordinator Ortiz & Aquatics Staff will give a presentation on the upcoming summer programs & pool activities. Recreation Coordinator Richard Ortiz gave a preview of the summer recreation programs. -Recreation will offer summer recreation programs at Copper Trails Elementary; Centerra Mirage Academy; Trivium Academy; Basis Goodyear; and Mobile Elementary. -Activities offered range from arts & crafts, board games, gym games, video games and more. -Field trips are offered once a week to a variety of places: Harkins Theatres, Fat Cats, Elevate Trampoline, Rush Fun Park, and Goodyear aquatics center. -There are 435 spots on the program, and they filled up on the first day of registration. Also note, there is a resident-only policy for the first week of registration. -The Jr. Leader Program is a youth volunteer program for teens, ages 13-14, that promotes skill development and gives them the opportunity to be hired in the future as program staff. This year, five Jr. Leaders were hired as staff. Recreation Coordinator Cassandra Brown and Ashlie Yingling gave a preview of the summer aquatics programs. -Aquatics center at GRC opened April 6th, for weekend swimming and will open seven days a week after Memorial Day weekend. Loma Linda Pool will open May 25th. -Aquatics programs that are offered: Michael Phelps Foundation offers free swim lessons for 100 children at Loma Linda Pool; swim lessons for all ages and adaptive lessons for the youth; water fitness programs offered are aqua Zumba and water aerobics; and this year another swim team was added for a total of four swim teams. -The Jr. Guard Program is a youth volunteer program for teens, ages 13-14. Volunteers are trained with 4-day classes and work closely with the lifeguards. This year there were ten Jr. Guards that got certified and hired. -There are 115 lifeguards trained and certified for this summer aquatics program. -Loma Linda Pool renovations are on track to replaster the pool; new diving boards; new starting blocks; refurbished cool decking; restrooms; and a manager’s office. -The new splash pad renovation at Loma Linda pool is to be completed by the summer of 2025. -This summer there will not be reservations for open swimming, it will be on a first come, first-serve basis. |

PARKS & RECREATION (P&R) FISCAL YEAR (FY) 25-27 STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN (Deputy Director David Seid) -P&R Department Deputy Director David Seid will give an update on the department's finalized strategic action plan. -Parks and Recreation Deputy Director David Seid gave the commissioners a copy of the Parks & Recreation FY25-27 Strategic Action Plan. -David stated that the Parks and Recreation FY25-27 Strategic Action Plan aligns the department's strategic goals to the overall mission of the City of Goodyear. -The Goodyear’s Strategic Plan uses the city’s vision and these five City Council focus areas as the roadmap for action: Fiscal & Resource Management; Economic Vitality; Safe and Vibrant Community; Innovative & High Performing Organization; and Infrastructure. -The Parks & Recreation Department Strategic Action Plan identifies these strategic pillars: Employee Engagement; Safety; Community Engagement; Operations; Quality of Life; and Strategic Planning. |

PARKS & RECREATION (P&R) DEPARTMENT UPDATES (Deputy Director David Seid) -Deputy Director Seid will provide P&R Department updates Parks and Recreation Deputy Director gave these department updates. -Spring training has come to a successful end, with good attendance at the games. -Hop n Hops was a huge success with approximately 10,000 in attendance. -Lakeside Music Fest is coming up on Friday, April 12th. -Dave showed a draft of the I10 basin concept and feasibility study and stated that planning is moving forward. -There are 129 acres between Bullard and Dysart that potentially can be used for a variety of purposes, from multi-use turf fields, trails, parking, a pickleball facility, and an indoor facility. -David reiterated that this is the first step in the planning phase, the concept is a long-term project, and he will keep the commissioners informed of the progress. -Goodyear Recreation Campus phase II and the Bullard Wash bond project are in the planning, and he will share updates as they occur. |
