Resolution - Parks and Recreation:
Consider a resolution approving a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, to change the name of the Lakewood Development Area, located at 5901 99th Street, Lubbock, Texas, to Gary Ward Basin.
Item Summary
The Lakewood Development Area was accepted by the City Council as City property on May 22, 2014, designated as a storm water detention basin. Neighbors of the area have enjoyed the amenities, which the City placed around the perimeter of the area, although its primary purpose has been that of a detention basin. A group of neighbors contacted the Parks and Recreation staff in October 2021, about renaming the area after a local resident.
As per the Policy on Park Naming, groups or organizations can submit a request to the Director of Parks and Recreation and present the information to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The Board will then consider the request, and upon their approval, recommend the action to the City Council for their approval.
The request and petition, with 104 signatures, to change the name of the Lakewood Development Area to Gary Ward Basin, was presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board by the neighborhood group at the January 24, 2022 board meeting. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board unanimously approved the request and is recommending approval by the City Council.
Fiscal Impact
$500 is projected for expenditures to amend the existing area sign, and will be funded in the Parks and Recreation Operating Budget for park signage.
