Resolution - City Council:
Consider approval of a resolution naming the Citizens Tower East Plaza in honor of former Lubbock City Councilman T.J. Patterson.
Item Summary
T.J. Patterson was Lubbock’s first African-American City Councilman and represented District 2 for 20 years, beginning his service in 1984. T.J. was a tremendous public servant and was dedicated to both District 2 and the entire Lubbock community. The dedication to our community and the legacy established by Patterson and his family is evident throughout Lubbock today. The T.J. and Bobbie Patterson Library in East Lubbock is named in honor of T.J. and his wife Bobbie, while his daughter, Shelia Patterson Harris, serves as the District 2 Councilwoman today. T.J. loved the people of Lubbock and cared for this community for his entire adult life. He was a Vietnam Veteran and had many practices of spreading joy throughout the community, including his annual visit to inmates at the Lubbock County Detention Center on Christmas Day. T.J. published a weekly newspaper for many years and loved Lubbock.
Upon passage, the East Plaza will be named the T.J. Patterson Memorial Plaza in honor of his life-long commitment and service to Lubbock.
Fiscal Impact
Sufficient funds are available in CIP 8634, City Council Initiatives to complete the appropriate improvements to the Plaza.
