Resolution - City Manager:
Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute a Host Venue Agreement with World Triathlon Corporation, in connection with the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon event.
Item Summary
In 2019, the historic Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3 event moved to the City of Lubbock with the swim event originating at Historic Dunbar Lake. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic and the 2021 event is currently scheduled. The City of Lubbock and the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) have negotiated a five-year Host Venue Agreement (Agreement) to ensure this event remains in Lubbock and remains an official Ironman event and qualifier. The Agreement details obligations and benefits for both parties.
Visit Lubbock and Market Lubbock, Inc. have supported the event for many years and have offered continued support. Support from Market Lubbock includes payment of the $80,000 event fee and a commitment to provide 82 hotel rooms to WTC if registrations for the event reach 2,000 athletes. The 2019 event had 1,305 registered athletes. In addition to the support from Visit Lubbock and Market Lubbock, Inc., the City will provide safety and oversight services on the same basis as was provided in 2019.
Fiscal Impact
Fiscal impact to the City is included in annual operating budgets. Event fee payment is from Visit Lubbock and Market Lubbock, Inc. on an annual appropriation basis.
