Police duty and training ammunition is necessary to equip, train, and maintain officer proficiency with officers' firearms. The proficiency requirements are mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Officers are provided training ammunition for qualifications, and the duty ammunition is used and replaced once each year. Re-loaded or re-manufactured ammunition is not acceptable, due to reliability and liability issues.
• Police officers are required to qualify twice each year to demonstrate pistol proficiency.
• Officers who are issued patrol rifles, are required to have proficiency training at least twice each year.
• Officers who are issued shotguns, are required to have proficiency training and qualification at least once each year.
• Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) teams train twice each month, and incorporate firearms training.
