ITEM TITLE:

Interim Ward 4 Councilor - Oath of Office

ACTION REQUESTED:

The City Attorney will administer the Oath of Office for the Interim Ward 4 Councilor.

ISSUE STATEMENT:

Section 27 of the Springfield City Charter requires elected officials to take an oath of office before assuming their office.

DISCUSSION/FINANCIAL IMPACT:

During the April 20, 2026, regular session, the Council voted to appoint a new Ward 4 Interim Councilor who must take an oath of office before assuming their duties. An oath of office is a sworn promise and statement of fact that the oath taker will uphold the law and perform their duties with integrity and to the best of their abilities.

The Ward 4 Interim Councilor’s term will continue through December 31, 2026. The next term for the Ward 4 Councilor will begin January 1, 2027. The election for that position will occur at the November 2026 general biennial election.
