Agenda Item Text:
Approve the expenditure by the Sheriff's Office of $61,681.24 to purchase 120 Glock .45 caliber handguns and repair parts.
Background:
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office has been given $61,681.24 by a private donor for the purchase of Glock 21, .45 caliber handguns and the recommended on-hand repair parts.
The Colt 1911 handgun will remain the traditional handgun of the Sheriff's Office. The purchase of the Glocks will allow an alternate handgun to be carried, on duty and for specialty assignments.
Certified Deputies and Detention Officers will be given the option, once they are trained and demonstrate proficiency, of carrying the Glock. The Glock affords the opportunity to carry more ammunition both within the handgun and in the issued magazines. The Glock is also less complicated to repair and operate.
The Colt 1911 handguns have been used by the Sheriff's Office for a number of years. They will be reaching their end life and required replacing if we continue with solely using the handguns we have now.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):
If approved, the Sheriff's Office will request purchase of the handguns and parts. We anticipate receipt of this equipment around the end of the year. We will then provide transition training for those that want to carry the Glock.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
The Sheriff's Office will not be able to purchase new handguns. Deputies and detention officers will not have the opportunity to carry the higher capacity firearms.
To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:
Request approval of expenditure of donated funds.
