Approve Contract 2015-AL-003 between the Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office for overtime costs and employee related expenses for DUI/Impaired driving education and enforcement in the amount of $40,000 effective October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015 .

Background:

The Sheriff's Office receives yearly funding through grants from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety to finance activities related to enforcement and education to reduce the number of incidents occuring due to impaired or distracted driving. These funds are used for mandatory deployments, generally during peak holiday periods, as well as community activiites designed to educated the citizens on the dangers of impaired or distracted driving. Other details such as Covert Underage Buyer Program, which targets businesses identified as selling alcoholic beverages to minors are also conducted. Other educational activities to include information on use of passenger restraints, use of bicycle helmets by children and safety equipment when using other outdoor equipment is also conducted.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

If approved, the Sheriff's Office will continue to conduct educational activities as well as enforcement to help reduce incidents of DUI/Impaired driving accidents.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

The Sheriff's Office will not be able to conduct many of these extra educational and enforcement activities due to shortage of overtime funding.
