Information
Agenda Item Text:
Approve appointment of Gary W. Ramaeker to serve as Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore for Justice Court Precinct 5 as authorized under A.R.S. §22-121 for a term commencing on September 12, 2017 to and including June 30, 2018, and approve his appointment as Juvenile Hearing Officer as authorized under A.R.S. §8-323.
Background:
This appointment is requested to fill the Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore slot left vacant by the retirement of Justice of the Peace Leslie Sansone. Judge Sansone served the court since January, 2003. Occasionally, this position will provide coverage for matters that may arise in other Cochise County justice courts.
The court may only appoint Justices of the Peace Pro Tempore with the approval of the Board of Supervisors. This request to approve the appointment of Gary W. Ramaeker follows the conclusion of a competitive recruitment process in compliance with Arizona Code of Judicial Administration Chapter 3 Section 1-305 and Administrative Order 2014-003.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):
Appointment as Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore by the Presiding Judge of Cochise County.
Appointment as Juvenile Hearing Officer by the Presiding Judge of Cochise County and Presiding Juvenile Judge of Cochise County.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
As Juvenile Hearing Officer, traffic citations could not be heard in the precinct where the citation was issued.
As Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore, court calendars would become backlogged leading to long delays in securing hearings.
