Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve Amendment #1 to the Arizona Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Program Contract #ADHS18-180472 between the Arizona Department of Health Services and Cochise Health and Social Services, in the amount of $125,000, effective  September 1, 2018 through August 31, 2019.

Background:

The opioid prescribing awareness grant is awarded through a grant from the CDC in an effort to create an awareness around safe opioid prescribing practices and the processes by which to make treatment referrals. The education provided has demonstrated success in other states in reducing the number of unnecessarily prescribed opioids reducing the number of prescription abuse situations, especially among teens.  Specifically, our aim focuses on promoting responsible prescribing and dispensing policies and practices and enhancement of assessments and referrals to substance abuse treatment. One of CHSS’s public health nurses facilitates this education throughout the county with providers and provider groups.

New in FY 2019 will be the development and organization of a local opioid fatality review team to investigate drug overdose fatalities that have occurred in Cochise County and utilize data to identify potential risk factors for opioid overdose; recommend and establish local policies to prevent additional overdose deaths; and increase coordination between state and local agencies in the development of new substance abuse prevention projects and initiatives.

The 2019 funding represents a 25% increase over 2018.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):
