Approve two additional full time equivalents (FTE) for the County Attorney's Office for border crimes prosecution, funded under Agreement M21-0082 with the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA), approved by the Board on February 8, 2022, and effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2025.
Background:
On February 8, 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved Agreement M21-0082 with the Arizona Department of Emergency Management and Military Affairs (DEMA) for Cochise County Border Related Crimes, Prosecution and Imprisonment. The Agreement provides $170,000 per year, for 4 years, for the prosecution of border related crimes. The County Attorney plans to hire two positions under this Agreement to handle the influx of prosecution cases: one (1) Attorney III, and one (1) Legal Secretary III position. The positions were already budgeted for under 204-3000-3154 GL. Related expenses will be reimbursed to the General Fund for these positions.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
On Board Approved, the County Attorney's Office will move forward with staffing the the two (2) positions.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
The County Attorney's Office will be unable to comply with the Agreement and handle the influx of additional prosecution cases.
