Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve Grant Agreement RCAPD-23-002 between the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission (ACJC) and the Cochise County Attorney's Office (CAO) in the amount of $503,349.76, effective December 1, 2022 through December 1, 2025, for the Rural County Alternative Prosecution and Diversion Program.

Background:

As part of the County Attorney's Office's efforts to provide equal access to the Diversion Program, this office applied for a grant that would create additional positions and programs while reducing the cost of prosecution. The Agreement will fund two positions for three years and allow for the development of additional Diversion Programs, supporting the needs of community members involved in non-serious cases and saving the County money. The grant will also provide funding for a vehicle, operating expenses, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), training funds, and language translation services. Additionally, this grant does not require a match. It is anticipated that the Diversion Program will become financially self-sustaining by the end of the grant period.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Obtain signatures via DocuSign to be sent to ACJC.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

The County Attorney's Office would likely experience an increase in cases that would otherwise be resolved using the Diversion program; taxpayers would assume the added expenses. Diversion Services may become disproportionately available across the County.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:

Obtain approval from the Board and Certified copies of the Board Minutes.
