Agenda Item Text:

Authorize sending the attached letter which supports the National Park Service's proposed invasive plant species control efforts in the Chiricahua National Monument, Ft. Bowie National Historic Site and the Coronado National Memorial.

Background:

The National Park Service is soliciting comments regarding that agency’s proposed implementation of an invasive plant species control program at the Chiricahua National Monument, Ft. Bowie National Historic Site and the Coronado National Memorial. The NPS proposes to use an integrated Pest Management (“IPM”) program which is a comprehensive control approach considered more effective than single-control strategies. The NPS intends to conduct post-treatment assessments to determine the effectiveness of this control strategy.

We support this integrated and multi-faceted approach to invasive plant species management within Cochise County, as doing so would help improve wildlife habitat and forage, improve the integrity of riparian areas, and increase rangeland productivity. Well-managed, proactive and comprehensive invasive plant species control regimes such as is being proposed by the NPS are effective in discouraging the proliferation of invasive plants; this is especially important in the aftermath of significant fire events to ensure invasive plants do not become established in fire-affected areas.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Have the Chairman sign and send the letter.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

The County would not provide comments.
