Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve Amended Funding Agreement for federal reimbursement for reduction of case backlog activities provided by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for Reduction of Case Backlogs between the Cochise County Superior Court and the Arizona Supreme Court, Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), in the amount of $21,000, effective April 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024.

Background:

The purpose of the grant funding is to support the reduction of backlog cases by utilizing senior commissioners to conduct settlement conferences in the superior court for criminal and civil cases to reduce the number of cases set for jury trial. The AOC amended the funding agreement by extending the term by one year from June 30, 2023  to June 30, 2024 and moving $13,000 from the ARPA 2 to the ARPA 1 funding agreement for FY24. The original funding agreement was approved at the May 24, 2022 Board of Supervisors' regular meeting.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Initiate the reduction in case backlogs by utilizing the services of senior commissioners and receive reimbursement for the cost of the commissioners from the AOC on a quarterly basis.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

No funding for the Case Backlog Program
