Information

Agenda Item Text:

Approve a grant award from the Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) to the Cochise County School Superintendent for the Student Advisory Council, in the amount of $19,993.

Background:

The purpose of the Student Advisory Council is to give students, the core of everything we do at Cochise County School Superintendent's Office, a voice at the County level while they explore how to lead and work with others. Our goal is to address local educational challenges by demonstrating communication and leadership skills. This initiative fosters civic engagement and empowers students to work for positive change within their schools and communities. Additionally, we plan to use these funds for a field trip during which students will interact with state-level leaders and improve their interpersonal skills by engaging in peer-to-peer and peer-to-professional dialogues. Students apply to the Council and our recruitment efforts continue to ensure we have representatives from across the County. If approved, this donation would enlarge the scope of what the Student Advisory Council can accomplish by providing the funds for travel, learning materials, and two in-person meetings.

Department's Next Steps (if approved):

Share and follow the proposed budget under the advisement of the Superintendent’s Office Accountant. A field trip to Phoenix to present to the Arizona State School Board and interact with state officials is tentatively scheduled for June.

Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:

We do not have another source of funding, therefore the Student Advisory Council would not be able to travel to Phoenix, have learning materials provided, or have in-person meetings. We could continue to have monthly meetings on Zoom.

To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:
