Information
Agenda Item Text:
Approve Fiscal Year 2013 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) 2013-H5318-AZ-DJ Application in the amount of $35,590 for the period of July 1, 2013- July 1, 2017 to purchase equipment for the Sheriff’s SWAT Team.
Background:
This grant is an annual award of monies that can be used for a variety of purposes. This year’s award is to be used for SWAT equipment. During high risk tactical missions, CCSO SWAT Unit operatives are exposed to volatile environments and violent criminal offenders from which lethal encounters are apparent. The above identified equipment will provide SWAT operatives body armor protection during these high risk tactical missions and better capability towards ending these types of incidents with the least amount of risk of potential injury to the operatives, criminal offenders, and the immediate public. Investigative duties and responsibilities of CCSO Deputies involve proper and thorough documentation of crime scenes. Digital recorders and cameras will provide necessary resources to Deputies which will assist in producing a higher percentage of prosecutable cases which result in higher conviction rates, thus promoting Public safety.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
Procure SWAT equipment detailed in the application.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
Equipment will not be purchased.
To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:
Provide a certified copy of the minutes from this meeting with approval to the Sheriff’s Office to file with the submission of the grant. Upon receipt of grant approval the Sheriff's Office will forward to the Board of Supervisor's office for signature by County Administrator, Michael Ortega.
