Agenda Item Text:
Approve hiring one additional Justice Court Security Officer for fiscal year 2013-2014 and the purchase of related officer equipment with an estimated cost of $39,205.
Background:
The Justice Court Security Fee was adopted in 2008 to provide the Justice Courts with supplemental funding for new security officers, and related equipment, within those courts.
The addition of one (1) new officer will provide an increase in court security coverage at the Sierra Vista Justice Court. The safety and security of court employees, litigants, public, and our own security staff within the Justice Courts, remains of the utmost importance and a high priority. Additional security is required to support this busy court. The court has become even busier the last couple years and ranks 12th statewide in terms of filings.
A new officer will allow for continuous security staffing during business hours. Currently, there are some business hours when no coverage can be provided due to limited security staff. Also, there are many instances when an officer presence is needed, in the court rooms, but, with only one officer on duty, we are unable to provide that presence. The inability to provide two officers, at this busy court, presents an officer safety issue as no assistance is readily available should the need arise to control an unruly and/or disorderly customer.
FIRST YEAR COST FOR 1 ADDITIONAL OFFICER
Salary plus ERE $ 34,565.00
Psychological Test $ 400.00
Uniform Allowance $ 240.00
Related equipment – est. $ 4,000.00
Total $ 39,205.00
FUNDING SOURCE:
The funding stream from the security fee is adequate to support and sustain the additional security officer in Sierra Vista. General funds will not be needed to support this position
