Agenda Item Text:

Approve a Proclamation declaring the month of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month encouraging all motorists to Drive Aware and avoid distracted driving which poses severe risk to all riders as well as to others who share the road, and encouraging motorcycle riders to obtain specialized training and education to ensure safe riding habits.

Background:

May is the nationally recognized Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  Due to its very favorable, nearly year-round riding conditions, Cochise County is a favorite destination for motorcyclists from all over Arizona as well as other parts of the country.  There are more registered motorcycles on the road than ever before, and while motorcycle fatalities have very recently declined, there are still far too many crashes that result in the death or serious injury of riders.  The most common problem for crahses involving other motor vehicles (about 3/4 of all crashes), is that the drivers of vehicles do not see motorcycles.  The purpose of today's Proclamation and related events at the County are to 1) raise driver awareness of motorcycles sharing the roadway and the risks posed to them (and other motorists) from distracted driving, 2) to encourage all riders to become properly trained in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation-approved course and to wear proper gear at all times when riding, 3) to acknowledge and encourage the use of motorcycles as a means to reducing fuel consumption and 4) to help 'humanize' motorcyclists so that other drivers remember that "Real People Ride" -- people with families and jobs who contribute to society.
