Agenda Item Text:
Approve a Memorandum of Agreement between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office for reimbursement of overtime salary costs and other costs incurred by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office in providing resources to assist ATF effective April 1, 2015 through September 30, 2019.
Background:
Members of the Cochise County Sheriff's Office periodically assist ATF with investigations within Cochise County. A good example of this was a recent burglary of a storage unit in Willcox where numerous firearms were stolen. This was a combined investigation done by the Sheriff's Office and ATF. ATF has offered to reimburse the Sheriff's Office for overtime salary and other costs, including but not limited to travel, fuel, training and equipment. This is a definite advantage to the Sheriff's Office and Cochise County to be able to recoup some of these expenses. There is no fiscal requirement on our part. This agreement is valid through September 30, 2019. This has been reviewed and approved by the County Attorney's Office.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
Request reimbursement from ATF for expenses incurred during joint investigations.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
The Sheriff's Office will still be required to participate/investigate crimes within Cochise County that involve ATF as a partner. With this MOA in affect, we will be able to recoup costs. If it is not approved these costs will continue to come out of the county budget.
To BOS Staff: Document Disposition/Follow-Up:
Please approve and sign agreement and return to the Sheriff's Office.
