Approve the City of Tucson High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Grant Agreement HT-15-2526 in the amount of $194,333 between the City of Tucson and Cochise County for the period January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2016.
Background:
The Sheriff's Office has participated in this grant (HIDTA) where the grant funds two full time deputy positions, along with some small operating costs. These deputies are assigned to the Southern Arizona Major Investigative Team (SAMIT). This team works with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and local law enforcement agencies in Cochise County to identify, locate, and eradicate subjects who use, transport, and distribute illicit drugs in communities in Cochise County, AZ.
Department's Next Steps (if approved):
If approved, CCSO will continue its participation with SAMIT by providing two fulltime deputies/narcotic detectives, assigning them to the team.
Impact of NOT Approving/Alternatives:
If the grant is not approved, CCSO may have to lay off two deputies if there are no openings in the positions utilizing allocated budgeted funds from Cochise County.
